Dr Andrew Apel

Dr. ApelDr Andrew Apel completed his ophthalmology training in Brisbane. He  undertook a two year Corneal and External Diseases Fellowship at the University of Toronto, Canada from 1992-1994, working at the Hospital for Sick Children and the Toronto Hospital.

Dr Apel has over fifteen years experience in treating medical and surgical corneal and external diseases. He has lectured and published in peer reviewed journals on these topics.

He performs intra-ocular surgery in the form of lens and cataract extraction and implantation of spherical and toric intra-ocular lenses and also Implantable Collamer Lenses (ICL) for refractive error associated with corneal transplants.  Other surgical interests include corneal transplants, combined cataract and glaucoma operations, pterygium excisions with conjunctival autografts, anterior segment trauma repair and treatment of ocular surface neoplasia.

His paediatric expertise includes neonatal cataracts and corneal transplants as well as limbal excision and lamellar grafts, cataract extraction, posterior chamber lens implantation and trauma repair in older children.

He is an Aviation Medical Examiner (DAME) for CASA and examines the ocular health of Pilots and Air Traffic Controllers.

Dr Apel is a Director of the Queensland Eye Hospital, and Chairman of The Independent Ophthalmic Network.

Dr Apel has busy private practices in Brisbane City, Kenmore and Bundaberg, and has a public hospital appointment at the Princess Alexandra Hospital.

Mr Nichalas Nuttall

Mr. NuttalMr. Nuttal has worked for Queensland Health all his life. Some of the positions he has held include Technical Assistant (Respiratory function testing), Medical Lab Technician (Biochemistry, virology, Neonatal screening, Histology), Medical Scientist (Microbiology), IT Liaison Officer, Project Officer,Training Coordinator and Client Services Manager. He became the Manager of the Queensland Eye Bank in August, 2006.

His qualifications are impressive, having dedicated a significant portion of his life to study. They include:

Dr. Peter Beckingsale

Dr Peter Beckingsale graduated from the University of Queensland Medical School in 1996 and completed his residency and ophthalmology training in Brisbane.  He was awarded the ARVO and RANZCO/Allergan scholarships. He then went to England for fellowship training at The West of England Eye Unit and then the Queen Victoria Hospital in
East Grinstead where he underwent subspecialty training in corneal, anterior segment and refractive surgery. 

He is a member of the Corneal Society and the Australian and New Zealand Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons.  He is a visiting consultant ophthalmologist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital, as well as being in private practice in Brisbane. He is a senior lecturer at the University of Queensland and Assistant Medical Director of the Queensland Eye Bank.

He practices primarily in the areas of corneal and refractive surgery, and is particularly interested in advances in corneal transplantation, including deep lamellar and endothelial keratoplasty.
